Scott Ohlgren's bio
Former User of Spam and Velveeta Cheese
I am a 54-year old student, teacher, and beneficiary of the natural healing model. Raised in the heart of Wisconsin in the 1960s, back when Spam and Velveeta cheese were considered part of the 4 Food Groups, my introduction to the diet-symptom, diet-health connection came just in time. At the age of 19, tired of acne, a growing sinus problem and four years of tetracycline, a friend shoved a book into my hands, saying, "Change your diet, and those health problems will go away." Five weeks later, the symptoms were gone.
From that point on, I became fairly obsessed with the whole art form of getting rid of health problems through a change in nutrition. Periodic cellular cleansing has been one of my main regular life habits, and is the major reason why I haven't used a single antibiotic or prescription drug since 1976.
Since those early days, I've become an proponent, lecturer, and author for a drug-free, pain-free, and disease-free life, using real food nutrition as one's main medicine cabinent. Not because I'm convinced that the modern world will eventually want these things, but more because I feel that there are others like me, who want to know the real cause/effect reason behind their symptoms, and who can't stand the idea of drugs floating through their bloodstream and using them to cover up symptoms.
Some other factoids: In 1985, I studied whole food nutrition at the 9-month Kushi Institute Graduate Program. In 1988, I became a certified Rolfing Practitioner, from the Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado. About that time, my first articles started appearing in the Bay Area Monthly, and I was interviewed in Success Magazine. I wrote my first book in 1992, and together with my tapes, videos and other books on the diet/disease, diet/health connection, over 90,000 copies are in circulation. I've been certified as a Holistic Health Practitioner by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I was the keynote speaker at the 2003 annual meeting of the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT), held in Snowbird, Utah. And each month, through the 28-Day Cleanse Course, I take new participants through the same process that I learned 25 years earlier.
My main passion is to have people prove to themselves--to have the physical experience--of this connection between their current symptoms and the food that they have been eating for decades. That the role of healer belongs not to those from hospitals or laboratories or the high priests of medicine, but is actually as close to home as our own hand to mouth. To show that our job -- as parents, teachers, and leaders--is to return the responsibility for our health back to where it has always belonged. I contend that living with a body and mind free of prescription drugs is one of the great hidden pleasures in our modern world.
In my mid-twenties, shortly after reading Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, by Dr. Weston Price, I took off on a trip around the world that lasted just short of three years. From 1979–1982, I hitch hiked through eastern Europe, spent a year through Africa, sailed for four months on a 41-foot sloop off the coast of Madagascar, and then six months living in Australia. I did a similar seven-month voyage again in 1996, going back and visiting many of the friends I made 17 years earlier.
When I'm not being lazy and sitting in front of my multiple Mac computers, I paraglide, ski, am a rabid Sheepshead player (a strange mid-western card game), do hot yoga each week, jog, lift weights, and have been a scuba diver since 1980. I currently live in Boulder, Colorado with cat Lila, an outside sauna and cold plunge. My next big acquisition will be a goat and a few chickens, to mess with the cat's mind.
I started an organic functional beverage company in 2006, to bring to the market place truly functional drinks without caffeine. Our first drink is called Brain Toniq, which currently sells on our website, at Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottages, hundreds of other health-food stores across the US, Europe, the Middle East, and a few retail locations in the Caribbean and Australia. Organic agave sweetened, zero caffeine, and highly effective for increasing cognitive function.
I think Eddie Izzard is the funniest comedian alive today.
