| My naturopath recommended coffee enemas as a beneficial thing to help speed up a detox. I've been doing them once a week for about 5 weeks. I live in a relatively rural area that has no colon hydrotherapists, so I thought this would be at least an intro. Has anyone else tried this, or other types of home enemas, and found them to be helpful? |

| I've never used them. They have a long history, though, and most modern-day good naturopaths still recommend them. |

Hi sumerallen,
Not sure if you're still interested in insight on this subject, but I just re-joined the forum and I feel compelled to comment on coffee enemas after my experience with them.
First, if you are avoiding caffeine, I would not recommend doing coffee enemas. The caffeine in the coffee is absorbed through the colon. When I first started doing coffee enemas, I LOVED them. I was two weeks into my first 28-day cleanse, and they would give me this HUGE rush... Which I later figured out was a caffeine high! Needless to say, I wasn't so excited about them anymore, once I figured they were causing me to "cheat" on my cleanse.
Secondly, I don't have any proof for this, but I believe that coffee enemas actually WORSEN acne. After doing the enemas for awhile, I started to notice a pattern: My skin was clear, until the day after an enema. Acne would start to pop up!... and my skin is almost always clear these days.
Third, and most embarassing, about a year ago I started noticing blood in my stool. Then I remembered the pain that I would sometimes feel in my lower right abdomen after doing a coffee enema. The pain during a BM got to be so bad that I asked my doctor to take a look. He found a "patch of highly inflammed tissue" just inside my anus, prescribed a strong corticosteroid, and told me that if I was 10 years older, he would be concerned about CANCER of all things!! Now, I don't know if my flare up has anything to do with the enemas, but I struggle to find another explanation.
So, thats my take on coffee enemas. I am no longer a fan. And I would not recommend them to anyone after my experience. Oh, and by the way, I was doing them "right". I'm the type of girl who does her research before embarking on a new health journey (hence, why I am doing the 28-day cleanse for the third time right now ). I only used the special, non-roasted, organic, specially-ground enema coffee, glass cookware, distilled water, and a fresh bag for my enemas.
I do hear that water enemas and even wheatgrass ones are inexpensive, effective, and safe alternatives to professionally-administered colonics. But, my advice to you is, be careful what you put up your butt! |

Hi summer,
The best and most legitimate explanation on coffee enemas can be found in a book by Dr. Sherry A. Rogers. The name of the book is "Wellness against all odds". She has a coulple of chapters that she dedicated solely to this subject and it is all based on her many years of research and experience dealing with thousands of patients suffering from severe chemical sensetivities and environmental illnesses. Without question she is at the top of the field and ahead of most of the rest. Her website is prestiegepublishing.com. It's a must read if you are trying to do them on a regular basis, and really want a good understanding of what's going on. She's writen over a dozen books now and the information in them is so deep and profound that it can be overwhelming. They lady just knows too much. Anyway, it's worth checking out. They are all very inexpensive. Hope this helps. Greg |
