What exactly is this "cleansing" and why do I need it ?

Cleansing is a way of improving the body's ability to eliminate excess metabolic waste and other toxins that have built up in our cells and tissues. There are several means of doing this, but the most effective central tool for doing this is our food: you stop eating things that create a backup of toxins, and start eating things that cleanse the cells and help repair damaged organs.

Cleansing is this: eating real food, and not eating junk and fake food. The effect of this is akin to a human body oil change. We would never consider driving our car, decade after decade, without changing its oil, yet we have no concept in our culture for the need to do this to our own body vehicle. From hundreds of books and writings on natural health, spanning two thousand years and scores of authors from Hippocrates, to America’s Dr. John H. Kellogg (yes, of corn flake fame), to the more recent Drs. Dean Ornish, Bernard Jensen, William Harris, Michael Klaper, Richard Schulze and many others, you will see references to repairing health through dietary cleanses. Why? Nothing comes close —not drugs, surgery, vitamin pills, expensive therapy, whatever—to its potential for cellular repair. A cleanse builds a foundation of health and vitality that most people will only dream of.

And no, this program is not a fast, or a starvation program, something difficult where you are hungry and deprived. Nor is it "taking vitamins". This working person's program starts with a 28-day cleanse that is a sane, economical, educational and whole food/superfood based system that flushes the body with real food and concentrated nutrition throughout each day. The meals and foods that you eat are delicious (we even give you over 200 recipes to start with). They are designed to help remove built-up metabolic waste, and then feed the cells re-mineralized, re-bacterialized, & re-enzymized (called The 3Rs) nutrition. These two simple actions—1. decreasing the sludge foods and 2. increasing the 3R foods—will give you the physical, undeniable experience of the power of cellular regeneration— which is nothing but our body's natural ability to heal through little else than a change to better nutrition.

What food will I be eating? Is this all raw? All vegeterian? All air?

The more appropriate question is "what foods do I need to eat in order to create the internal terrain that heals my symptoms?"

And the answer to that is: every person is slightly different. What will heal 10 people—each with the same symptom—will be slightly different for each person. That flexibility, and lack of a dogmatic approach, is not only critical to acknowledge, it is built into this 28-Day Cleansing Course.

Even given these differences, it's not hard to find the underlying tenets for basic cell cleansing in all humans. For example, the large majority of people lose their symptoms and experience the cleansing of their cells best by doing their program on a more plant-based diet. However, we see long-term 100% vegetarians who struggle with skin and digestion problems and can't repair until they add addional foods to their daily fare. Another tenet: virtually everyone heals with a large input of green foods. Another: for no other reason than speed of healing, a combination of some raw, and come cooked, is the best way (we see this especially with the healing soups). And another example: we've yet to find one person who got rid of skin or digestive disorder by including American dairy food in their diets.

So, the main suggested meals will be largely plant-based, a combination of some raw, some cooked, and non-dairy. Even with that, there's plenty of room for individualization. There is *no* one in the entire world who knows what exact meals will heal you, and initially this even includes you! Like the rest of us, you'll need to experiment, take yourself out of whatever food rules you've created up to now, and start to play with the basic cleansing concepts that have worked successfully over time by many people.

Years ago, one of our clients said it best in an email: "Oh, I get it: your approach is in the dogma-free zone!" We couldn't have said it better.

How did you get your start in all this?

I was born in 1956 and raised in Wisconsin, where Spam, Tang, Cocoa Puffs and Velveeta cheese were all considered part of the 4 Food Groups. When a human being consumes a diet rich in these items, something has to give, and when I reached puberty, that something was my face. In 1975, at the age of 19, tired of acne, a growing sinus problem and tetracycline, a friend shoved a book into my hands about a general approach to health called "natural hygiene." She said, "Change your diet, and the acne and sinus pain will go away." Five weeks later, after a simple cleansing program, the symptoms were gone.

From that point on, I read everything I could find on the food/health connection. I was particularly impressed by Dr. Weston Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" and the shocking before-and-after photos of indigenous people–healthy, perfect teeth, strong bones—next to photos of their brethren who'd changed to modern, highly-refined diets. I witnessed this firsthand a few years later, during an epic (in my eyes) three-year hitch-hiking trip around the globe in 1979-82. When I got back, I knew I wanted to study and teach health. So, in 1984, I enrolled in the Kushi Institute, a school that taught the food-disease/food-health connection.

What is your background?

I graduated from the Kushi Institute's 9-month school in 1985. I am board certified by the American Association for Drugless Practitioners to be a Holistic Health Practitioner and nutritional consultant. But really, like in any field of endeavor, the bigger credibility comes from 25+ years of practicing, studying, teaching, and then writing on cleansing and the diet/disease, diet/symptom connection, resulting in not needing/using a single antibiotic or prescription drug since 1976. And that's one of the bigger messages here: learning how to stay healthy does not require a degree. It only requires common sense. Click here to read more about my background, and how I got into cleansing.

But you're not a doctor.

For the 18 years I've been teaching cleansing, here are the two responses to this:

1. What does being an AMA medical doctor have to do with living a pharmaceutical-free life? It is, currently, a contradiction in terms. And,

2. Neither are you a doctor (most likely) but by the end of this program you will know more about the cause of colds, many illness, and skin and digestive injury, and what to do to repair them, than your doctor does.

This is not an exaggeration. No university—at least in America— currently teaches their medical students the diet/disease, diet/symptom connection as it relates to many symptoms. They don’t believe it. And, most importantly, they have not experienced this connection in their own body. Worse, they ignore the growing number of empirical examples of people who prove that Crohn’s is a very curable symptom, that the answer to gallstones is a change in diet (not the removal of the gallbladder), and that psoriasis disappears once the liver is cleansed. The number of classically trained M.D.s that fully understand the diet-symptom connection is probably fewer than 100, and every time we hear of one, or read about one, we list them in our Resources section at HowHealthWorks.com.

When it comes to traumatic injury—broken bones, car wrecks, surgery, repairing eyes — I am grateful beyond words for the skills and the technology of our modern medical system. It is the M.D.’s realm of genius. But until our medical community heals itself of its unholy relationship to the pharmaceutical industry, and starts to treat the body the way a gardener views the soil, and they can point to any of those symptoms listed on the opening page and tell their clients, “Those are caused by what you have been eating,” then those titled as a Medical Doctor will not be your best source for information on how to regenerate your body back to health.

Dr. Norman Shealy, MD said in 1996: "The next great advance in the health of the American people will come not from hospitals or laboratories, but from what people learn to do for themselves.” If what he says is true, then none of us should need degrees in order to know how to repair and regenerate our bodies, and keep ourselves healthy.

Personally, I plan on outliving every physician I know :)

Why did you develop the 28-day Regeneration Program?

Out of frustration. As a culture, I saw otherwsie intelligent people getting lost in the pharmaceutical myth, which says "your headache is there because of your body's lack of aspirin." It's akin to a dentist moving into a town where no one has yet discovered toothbrushes and everyone's wondering why they have cavities.

The 28-day regeneration program proves to each person that tries it that we are much more in control of the cause/effect of illness and symptom than we currently realize.

"My minister says this alternative health is New Age and I shouldn't do it." (an actual question from a book reader who was suffering from severe endometriosis)

God bless you, but just what does your minister think Jesus ate? We can only guess, but we can ascertain that it wasn't pasteurized cow milk, luncheon meats, mayonnaise, Pop-Tarts, Twinkies, Hostess Ding Dongs, Rice a Roni, Swanson TV dinners, SpaghettiOs, Kraft Singles, McDonalds, and ice cream.

New Age? Rubbish. The founding father of our own medical model—the one that all US physicians still follow—was Hippocrates, and he said, "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine by thy food." He wasn't lying, making up some theory, nor was he New Age. He was reporting what works.

I have a friend who's a Registered Dietician who thinks cleansing is all nonsense.

If you ever get a chance, go to the Registered Dietitian's annual meeting, called the American Dietitian Association (ADA) Convention. I did. Look around the room at the thousands of RDs that show up. Now close your jaw. You would be hard pressed to find a more unhealthy group of individuals in the world. It's as if that entire organization followed what they had been taught about food.

In October, 1997, the ADA held their annual convention. Out in the lobby, there were representatives from Hostess, Kraft, Jimmy Dean Sausage, The Sugar Association of America (I'm not making this up), and many others. Most were handing out samples. Here's a few examples:

  • The National Pork Association, sharing tips on (I'm quoting from the literature handed out) "science-based information on pork's role in a healthful diet."
  • The National Association of Margarine, where "a registered dietician will be available to discuss why leading health organizations continue to recommend margarine products."
  • Mars, Incorporated, "a manufacturer of high-quality food products such as Milky Way, Snickers, and Uncle Ben's rice."
  • The Sugar Foods Corporation, who handed out packets of Aspartame, nondairy creamers, Ranch Dressing with monosodium Glutamate

The monthly magazine for all American Registered Dietitians is called the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Pick up any issue and—I'm not making this up—along side ads for junk food, frozen Lean Cuisine dinners, and drugs such as Precose, you will find a list of corporate donors for the ADA, included Monsanto, Bristol-Meyers, and Dairy Mart. You will also find quotes such as this:

"The American food industry can be the nutrition professional's ally when it comes to providing complete and reliable nutrition information to the public. The food industry can also help consumers understand emerging nutrition issues by providing accurate information and feedback."

"Qualified dietetics need to continue to work with the food industry to help shape the public's food choices [emphasis mine]and their ability to think more critically about food and nutrition issues. Partnerships between the food industry and [the ADA] will help to communicate positive, simple, and consistent health messages for consumers."

I have no doubt that your dietician friend worked very, very hard for her degree, and it shows a level of education. What I doubt, very much, is the source of the teaching that was taught. The RDs I've met can talk science and cells and math well over my head, but they have very little clue about the diet/disease, diet/symptom connection.

There are RDs out there that completely understand the diet/disease connection. Read the introduction to my book, Cellular Cleansing Made Easy, to meet one with an amazing story. Suzanne Richardson is a Registered Dietitian who healed herself through food. There are more RDs like Suzanne, but understand: every single one of them needed to learn about real health outside of the ADA.

You suggest using (fill in the blank) in your cleansing program. I've heard that that particular herb/plant/substance is toxic.

Show me one document that would stand up to scientific peer review on that claim. If you believe you've found one, email me here.

So, is this program about becoming a vegetarian? Or a macrobiotic? Is it about becoming only eating raw food? What's the food religion you are recommending?

It is not necessary to join a food philosophy in order to heal your symptoms. You don’t need to declare allegiance in order to get healthier.

Yes, there are numerous food philosophies that describe how to best stay healthy. They run the gamut from the Mainly Protein diets, to Only Raw Foods, to Absolutely No Animal Protein, to the Grain-based Theory, to Traditional American, Traditional European, and Traditional Ancient. And everything in between. They have names such as vegetarianism, macrobiotics, vegan, traditional, Atkins, Ayurvedic, Paleolithic, and many others.

And true: a cleanse works faster, at least in the beginning, by eating more plants than animals. You will be putting a lot of vegetables through your body during the first few weeks. However, this cleansing program doesn't promote one particular school of food politics. Instead, it is teaching you the energetics of food. How food works in your body. One only needs to study a bit of dietary epidemiological history to see that there are many diets that can work to keep humans healthy and living drug free well into old age.

One of my passions and reasons for doing this work is to point out that there is more than one way to cleanse, and more than one way to stay healthy. Therefore, having some flexibility in your food beliefs and diet is not only necessary, it can be liberating, adventurous, and help keep you sane.

In the end, it doesn't matter how people experience becoming symptom-free. I only care that they learn that their diseases are largely self-created. And cleansing is a critical key to returning to pure health.

Are using herbs and natural foods a safe way to health?

Compared to what? Prescription medicine? Hospitals and surgery?

Let's DO compare: In 1998, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that bad reactions to prescription and over-the-counter medicines "kill more than 100,000 Americans and seriously injure an additional 2.1 million every year -- far more than most people realize. We estimated that in 1994 overall 2,216,000 hospitalized patients had serious Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and 106,000 had fatal ADRs, making these reactions between the fourth and sixth leading cause of death."

Such reactions, which do not include prescribing errors or drug abuse, rank at least sixth among U.S. causes of death -- just behind heart disease, cancer, lung disease, strokes and accidents. (University of Toronto study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Dr. Bruce Pomeranz )

Those numbers are worth repeating: 100,000 Americans die each year from adverse pharmaceutical drug reactions. That works out to 273 every day, or 11 every hour of every day, just in the US.

Is cleansing safe during pregnancy/nursing/post-surgery/old age/young age?

Cleansing is essentially eating well. You use whole grains, whole beans, dozens of fresh vegetables, broths, soups, juices, fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, pure oils, clean water, mineral-rich Celtic sea salt, deep sea and fresh water algaes, and organic herbs and spices. You remove junk food, fried foods, fast foods, fake foods, processed sugars, processed meats, preservatives, and artificial colorings.

Because of the litigious culture we live in, How Health Works can't say that the above foods are beneficial during pregnancy, nursing, surgery, etc. We believe it is, but that's a decision that needs to be left to each individual.

I don't have time to eat like this.

Then you have not accurately done the math equation in two areas of life: one, how much your symptoms really cost you; and two, how much your sickness really costs your country’s health-care system.

Saying you don’t have enough time to eat a healing diet is like saying you don’t have enough time to brush your teeth, or educate your children, or exercise. Our nation can no longer afford to ignore the skills of feeding ourselves as if our health depended on it. The marketing geniuses of the last 50 years has duped us into believing that we can live without real food (better living through chemistry and convenience). The truth is: if you rely on processed foods, eventually you will pay a heavy, heavy price.

I can't afford health food.

If you can afford to eat at McDonald's, and order pizza-to-go, then you most certainly can afford the cleansing foods outlined in this program. There is no cheaper way to eat than whole foods. Can't afford or get access to organic? That's fine; just select the cleanest foods you can get ahold of.

Can I ever return to eating what I used to?

Of course. You can eat anything you want. You always have been able to, and you always will be able to.

I think the real question here is, “Once I’ve gotten rid of my symptoms through a cleansing diet, can I ever return to eating whatever I want without my symptoms coming back?”

Yes and no. Once a body heals deeply, and a strong immune system is in place, people find that those with digestion or skin problems can eat some of their former meals and drinks without getting symptoms. They just can’t do it all the time. The occasional night of partying can be handled. Your skin or digestion or headache or kidneys will quickly tell you when enough is enough.

For example, let’s say you have acne. In most cases, you will be acne-free inside of the first 40 days. At some point, you’ll find you can occasionally eat the foods that helped create the internal condition that forced the skin to discharge as acne. Again, you just can’t eat them very often.

Here is an analogy that may help. If you get injured playing a sport you love, there’s no way you can return the next day and play the way you normally play. You have to go through a period of healing. The length of healing time will depend on the injury. Cut a finger? Take a day or two off. Bruise a calf muscle? Might take a week or two. Twist an ankle? It took me six months one time when I tripped over my dog’s toy in the back yard while running from the sauna to the house (midwinter—I was in a hurry). Break a bone? You could be out for a year, and during that year, you have to stay within a narrow range of physical behaviors in order to not re-damage yourself.

The purpose of this website and program is not to makes our choices about wrong or right. It is to show how your food choices are deeply connected to your current state of health and your current list of symptoms. Cleansing shows us the cause and effect relationship we have—and always will have—with food and our health.

I only want to purchase one book, not your whole $49 Course.

No problem. Every day, we fill orders for those who have already purchased one of the books on Amazon, or in a book store, and just need the other pieces. To order any single item, click here to go to the complete store. You'll also find the Complete Store link at the bottom of every page.
